Pelosi Confident on Health Vote

Seems to me when you talk publically about having the votes, you likely don’t have the votes. We need to keep fighting against this massive government take over of the American health care system.

WASHINGTON—House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Sunday expressed confidence she will have enough votes to pass a health overhaul, but acknowledged it could come at a political cost to lawmakers who back the measure.

Monday kicks off a critical week for Democrats to push ahead with their overhaul. President Barack Obama is expected to announce his preferred way forward for the bill. The White House has already laid the groundwork for Congress to complete the legislation using a process known as budget reconciliation that requires a simple majority in the Senate.

That process would start in the House. Ms. Pelosi said Sunday the House could unveil specific legislative language for the measure in a matter of days. Those would give more detail to the president’s proposed changes to the Senate bill designed to appeal to House lawmakers.

Dems push ‘up-or-down’ health care vote

Looks like Speaker Pelosi and other Democratic leaders are going to use a procedural trickery to pass a bill that will affect each and every American.

The White House and congressional Democrats are calling for what they are framing as an “up-or-down vote” on a health care overhaul bill, signaling that they are preparing to pass it through the controversial reconciliation process.

President Obama is expected to announce how he wants to proceed on the bill this week, but Democrats on Capitol Hill are already trying to rally around using reconciliation, which would eliminate the chance for a Republican filibuster.

Republicans have already accused Democrats of using the procedural tool to pass a major social-policy change, which they say was never how it was intended.

But Democrats say the health bill deserves a vote in Congress. Without using reconciliation, Republicans would likely use their 41 votes - which they acquired in January’s special election of Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown - to filibuster the bill, preventing it from getting a vote.

Pelosi: GOP has had its day; confident Dems can pull together on health bill

This isn’t about the GOP. It is about listening to the American people. They don’t want this radical health care bill. It is time to start over!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that Republicans have left their mark on the healthcare bill and should accept that the bill will go forward.

“They’ve had plenty of opportunity to make their voices heard,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning. “Bipartisanship is a two-way street. A bill can be bipartisan without bipartisan votes. Republicans have left their imprint.”

On ABC’s “This Week,” just a few days after the bipartisan healthcare summit, Pelosi said, “What’s the point of talking about it any longer?”

In early remarks released by ABC, Pelosi was asked by “This Week” host Elizabeth Vargas “when it does finally come to vote on it in the House, you’re certain that you can muster the 217 votes that you need even with the differences over abortion language?”
